Just three hours drive from San Jose, Arenal area of Costa Rica is simply spectacular. Approaching from either the west or east, your view ranges from dense forests and secluded lakes, coffee houses, galleries and the looming peak of Arenal volcano itself. Once considered one of the world’s most active volcanoes, it now lies dormant though as recently as 2010 it was possible to view smoke and ash spewing from its perfectly symmetrical cone. In the area surrounding the volcano there are many active pursuits to enjoy, including hiking, biking, horse riding and zip-lining through the forest canopy.
